DCM was founded in 2008 by Dario Suter, Christoph Daniel and Marc Schmidheiny – all three of whom hail from Switzerland – and started off as a film production company. When in 2010 Joel Brandeis joined the partners who gave the company its name, DCM became a Swiss quartet. Following the production of its first feature film, DCM decided to get involved in film distribution and, in 2011, acquired the Berlin-based film distribution company, Delphi Filmverleih, together with its existing team. In 2013 DCM extended its distribution business to Switzerland where it is managed by Stephanie Candinas. DCM’s first success as distributors came in 2012 with the award-winning film The Artist. “The most beautiful film of the past decade” (Stern magazine) captivated almost 700,000 cinema-goers in Germany alone. The Artist received five Oscars®, three Golden Globes® and numerous other awards. Today, in addition to its own productions, DCM continues to bring national and international productions to cinema screens.
In 1947 aeronautical engineer Howard Head skied for the first time and although he enjoyed the experience felt let down by the heavy equipment. Over the next three years he applied his Harvard degree in sciences and knowledge of lightweight aviation materials to the re-invention of the ski and in so doing would revolutionize mountain riding.
His sandwich aluminium ski, the first of its kind, made skiing accessible to a new breed of recreational skiers and reset the bar on the speed, control and performance at a professional level. Competition success, including a medal at the 1964 Olympics, in Innsbruck, Austria, followed, as did the global popularity of HEAD skis and the ski industry was forever changed.
This drive to create sports equipment that benefits both sports and participants lives on at HEAD BV. Through what we call the Intelligence Loop we rethink, refine and perfect sports equipment and apparel, so that the experience and ability of our consumers is always getting better.
HEAD BV is comprised of five divisions: Winter Sports, Racquet Sports, Diving, Sportswear and Licensing. And our brands include HEAD (alpine skis, ski bindings, ski boots, snowboard and protection products, tennis, racquetball, paddle and squash racquets, tennis balls and tennis footwear, sportswear and swimming products), Penn (tennis balls and racquetball balls), Tyrolia (ski bindings) and Mares (diving equipment).
Across all disciplines we believe that innovative technical sports equipment and apparel delivers results for sportspeople of all abilities, whether the measure of success is Olympic Gold or making first turns on the mountain easier.
This is sport the HEAD BV way
Facing East, a production and financing company based in Hong Kong, Beijing and Zurich, was formed in 2016 by Markus Barmettler and Philip Lee, executive producers of the Academy Award® winning THE REVENANT. The veteran duo, who boast over 20 productions between them, including CLOUD ATLAS, HERO, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON and PURPLE MOUNTAIN, were instrumental in developing the multi picture agreement between Guangdong Alpha Animation and Culture Company and New Regency. Facing East has since increased its capital base and financing capabilities, with support from HSBC and several Mainland Chinese banks. Facing East’s plan is to produce three or four large scale productions every two years, in addition to continuing its relationship with New Regency and making ad hoc investments in smaller projects. Beside the $100 million epic sci-fi INVERSION, directed by Katja von Garnier, starring Jack Huston, Samuel L. Jackson and Liu Yifei, the slate includes environmental three part sci-fi SHIPBREAKER, DROWNED CITIES and TOOL OF WAR based on books by Paolo Bacigalupi, written and to be directed by Paul Haggis.
Facing East most recently invested in DER HAUPTMAN (THE CAPTAIN), a German language film directed by Robert Schwentke (FLIGHTPLAN, INSURGENT, THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE), which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9th.
