In 1947 aeronautical engineer Howard Head skied for the first time and although he enjoyed the experience felt let down by the heavy equipment. Over the next three years he applied his Harvard degree in sciences and knowledge of lightweight aviation materials to the re-invention of the ski and in so doing would revolutionize mountain riding.
His sandwich aluminium ski, the first of its kind, made skiing accessible to a new breed of recreational skiers and reset the bar on the speed, control and performance at a professional level. Competition success, including a medal at the 1964 Olympics, in Innsbruck, Austria, followed, as did the global popularity of HEAD skis and the ski industry was forever changed.
